Delivering faster, more efficient & cost-effective bandwidth

CEnet’s Infrastructure Team has recently expanded the Secure Internet Gateway service to include Apple Edge Cache. These devices join our Google and Akamai caches in delivering faster, more efficient  and cost-effective bandwidth for the distribution of software applications and updates.

Apple Edge Cache, built/managed by Apple and installed within CEnet’s network, cache frequently accessed content, reducing the need to constantly fetch data from distant servers. This, in turn, reduces latency, improves response times, streamlines content delivery, and reduces the demand for external bandwidth - thereby decreasing the total cost of bandwidth delivered to CEnet and member networks.

Here are some of the key benefits that our new Apple Edge Cache service will deliver:

·   Reduced latency and improved response times:
By caching content locally, Apple Edge Cache significantly reduces the time it takes for members to access Apple data, applications, and websites. This leads to a more responsive and productive network environment.

·   Reduced bandwidth consumption:
By caching content locally, Apple Edge Cache reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred over CEnet’s internet border. This frees up bandwidth for other critical tasks, such as video conferencing and file transfers.

·   Improved content delivery:
Apple Edge Cache optimises content delivery for different types of devices, including Macs, iPhones, and iPads. This ensures that users have a smooth and consistent experience, regardless of the device they are using.

·   Reduced reliance on public cloud:
By caching content locally, Apple Edge Cache reduces our reliance on public cloud providers. This helps to reduce connectivity costs and improves data security.

The Apple Edge Cache service has already proven its worth, recently delivering major iOS and Mac updates to members at speeds in excess of 20Gbps and saving 383 terabytes of downloads in just 3 weeks. The below shows a traffic sample of Apple Edge Cache, taken on Friday 17 November 2023.

This exciting upgrade is a great example of the benefit of working at scale, and CEnet’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technology, delivering innovative solutions for our members.
